Explore Our Design Approach

At B Optimal, our core commitment is fostering empowerment.

We bring decades of experience as educators, learning designers, tutors, and sociologists to the work of creating tools that truly empower learners. Our expertise sits at the intersection of research-based pedagogy, metacognitive development, and practical design.

We believe that when students understand how they learn, they gain the confidence, clarity, and agency to navigate both academic and professional challenges. That belief shapes everything we create.

Whether students are preparing for an exam, planning an independent project, or articulating their skills for career opportunities—B Optimal tools meet them where they are and empower them for what's next.

Dr. Janine Bower

Director of Academic Partnerships & Learning Architect

Dr. Janine Bower is a learning strategist, educator, and applied sociologist whose work focuses on how students develop the skills and practices that make learning effective, transferable, and meaningful beyond the classroom. Her work spans higher education, industry partnerships, and organizational leadership development, and has been recognized with awards for advancing student learning, supporting faculty development, and contributing to institutional improvement.

Drawing on more than two decades of experience as a professor, program leader, and curriculum designer, Janine collaborates with colleges, employers, and leadership organizations to strengthen an often-overlooked layer of the learning ecosystem: how students actually plan, organize, execute, and reflect on their academic work. Her work translates insights from learning science, sociology, and experiential education into practical systems that help students build visible, transferable capabilities they can carry forward across courses, careers, and life.

Tim Bower, MA

Director of Research & Design, Organizational & Leadership Effectiveness

Tim Bower is an organizational sociologist, leadership scholar, and Empowerment Architect who designs systems that translate leadership ideals into coordinated, everyday practice. His work focuses on how organizations move from aspirational leadership values to the structures, processes, and feedback systems that allow those values to function in real institutional environments.

He is the creator of the 7-HTL Empowerment Framework, a system-based leadership model that integrates the Four I’s of transformational leadership with structural, psychological, and strategic empowerment. His applied tools—including the SHIFT Feedback System and PIVOT™ Micro-Feedback System—help leaders and organizations strengthen alignment, distribute leadership capacity, and sustain empowered performance over time.

Tim’s doctoral training in organizational sociology shapes the analytic precision behind every framework he develops. His work has contributed to widely used institutional tools, including analytic techniques within LibQUAL+, used by research libraries worldwide, and continues to inform the diagnostic systems and leadership toolkits he designs to help organizations translate vision into durable practice.
